University Studies Phytoremediation and Coalbed (CBM) Product Water
  • Phytoremediation of Coalbed Methane - Montana State University, Bozeman, MT, will conduct an evaluation of phytoremediation of coalbed methane product water and water of quality similar to that associated with coalbed methane reserves of the Powder River Basin, Montana and Wyoming. The project will also conduct aquifer mapping, stratigraphic, petrologic and lithologic characterization of coal-bearing aquifers and determine chemical composition and volume of water contained within aquifers in the Montana portion of the Powder River watershed where CBM development is contemplated. Total cost of this project is $2.08 million (DOE share: $1.65 million). U.S. Department of the Interior - National Park Service also contributed funds to this effort.

Other Montana Oil and Gas Projects
  • Geologic Exploration Model - Montana Tech of the University of Montana, Butte, MT, is conducting a $403,500 project (DOE share: $313,500) to identify a petroleum exploration fairway based on detailed stratigraphic research in the Permo-Pennsylvanian system across the region of south-central Montana. Predicting the location of major hydrocarbon entrapments in Montana's Permo-Pennsylvanian system is the most valued goal of this project.
