Plains CO2 Reduction Partnership
Description:
The Plains CO2 Reduction (PCOR) Partnership is a diverse group of public and private sector stakeholders working together to capture and store carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from stationary sources in the Northern Great Plains and adjacent areas. The PCOR Partnership is managed by the Energy & Environment Research Center (EERC) at the University of North Dakota and includes all or part of nine states (Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming) and four Canadian provinces (Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan), as well as a broad range of project sponsors.
The PCOR Partnership Phase II activities ran from October 1, 2005, to September 30, 2009. Four validation field trials of carbon sequestration concepts were conducted. The field tests involved storage and comprehensive monitoring of CO2 in depleted oil reservoirs, unmineable coal seams, and wetlands. Two of three geologic field tests evaluated enhanced oil recovery and CO2 sequestration in carbonate systems, while the third geologic project examined enhanced coalbed methane recovery and CO2 sequestration in unmineable lignite seams. The Partnership's terrestrial effort used a Northern Great Plains wetlands complex to demonstrate carbon offset market development.
